Gallery of Silesian-Ostrava

Gallery of Silesian-Ostrava is a cultural facility of the city district Silesian Ostrava. It was founded in 2008, starting with a series of exhibitions on architectural themes. Since 2009, the gallery has expanded its concept with photographic exhibitions focusing on stage design or famous people. Thanks to the expansion of the program the gallery has found its visitors also between school groups and the visitors began to return regularly. Since 2010, fine art has played a major role in the show schedule. Since 2011 the gallery dramaturgy has been preferring artists who tied their life, work or educational activities to Ostrava. A year later, seven major exhibitions were held. Aminy those were included collective exhibitions that introduced works of twenty artists. Last year young and promising artists found a great space in the exhibition program.

Among the most successful exhibitions are “The Labyrinth of the World and Heart” by a Theatre on a String stage designer Milivoj Husak, “Images from the Czech history and legends” by Renata Fučíková, an illustrator of children’s history books, or a joint exhibition by a painter Ivan Titor and a sculptor Igor Kirzberger. Unbeaten record in the number of visitors is held by “Beautiful Barbora, courageous Božena”, an exhibition on the life and work of the writer Božena Němcová.

In addition to large-scale exhibitions the gallery organizes supplementary and occasional installations in public spaces of the Silesian-Ostrava Town Hall. The exhibitions usually have supporting programs, such as openings, guided tours with the author, screenings, concerts, author readings, workshops and discussions.

Due to wheelchair accessibility there are also occasionally held conferences, social events or seminars in the Gallery of Silesian-Ostrava.
