19.00 Burning Bush (Screening room)

Czech Republic / Poland 2013, 206 minutes / Director: Agnieszka Holland

The story begins with Palach‘s self-immolation in January 1969 and with a description of the turbulent atmosphere in the society. The events get more dramatic after the scandalous allegation by Vilém Nový, a communist official who was dishonoring Palach’s sacrifice at a party meeting in Česká Lípa by false declarations about a so-called cold fire. The main figure in the story is an existing attorney Dagmar Burešová that, on behalf of Palach’s relatives, filed a lawsuit against Vilém Nový to protect Palach’s personal rights.

The part of a principled lawyer, who agreed to represent clients in a seemingly hopeless trial and patiently searched for evidence in their favor, was played by Tatiana Pauhofová. During normalization, JUDr. Dagmar Burešová was defending persecuted dissidents and after 1989 she became Minister of Justice. In 1990-1992, she served as the Chairman of the Czech National Council. The film was awarded eleven Czech Lions!
